Universal Life Insurance: Flexibility Meets Permanence

    Jan 15, 2024 6 min read

    What Makes Universal Life Different

Universal life (UL) insurance provides permanent coverage with flexible premiums and an adjustable death benefit. Unlike whole life, where premiums are fixed, UL allows you to increase or decrease premiums within certain limits.

The policy includes a cash value component that earns interest based on current market rates (for traditional UL), stock market index performance (for indexed UL), or investment sub-accounts (for variable UL).

    Types of Universal Life

Traditional UL earns a guaranteed minimum interest rate (typically 2-3%) with potential for higher current rates. It's the most conservative option but cash value growth may not keep pace with inflation.

Guaranteed UL (GUL) focuses on providing a guaranteed death benefit at the lowest possible premium. Cash value growth is minimal, but coverage is guaranteed to last your lifetime as long as premiums are paid.

Indexed UL (IUL) links cash value growth to a market index with a floor (typically 0%) protecting against losses and a cap limiting upside. Variable UL (VUL) allows direct investment in sub-accounts for potentially higher returns but with market risk.

Is Universal Life Right for You?

Universal life works best for people who want permanent coverage with flexibility — perhaps your income varies year to year, or you want the option to adjust coverage as needs change.

However, the flexibility can be a double-edged sword. If you consistently pay minimum premiums, the policy can lapse later in life when costs of insurance increase. Work with an experienced agent to monitor your policy regularly.
