What to Expect During a Life Insurance Medical Exam

    Jul 25, 2024 5 min read

    The Exam Process

A life insurance medical exam is a brief health screening conducted by a licensed paramedical professional, usually at your home or office. The entire process takes 20 to 30 minutes.

The examiner will measure your height, weight, blood pressure, and pulse. They'll collect blood and urine samples to test for cholesterol, glucose, nicotine, drugs, and liver/kidney function.

    How to Prepare

Fast for 8 to 12 hours before the exam for the most accurate blood results. Drink plenty of water to make blood draw and urine collection easier.

Avoid alcohol for 24 hours, heavy exercise for 12 hours, and caffeine on the day of the exam. Get a good night's sleep. All these factors can temporarily affect your readings.

Schedule your exam for the morning when blood pressure is typically lowest and fasting is easiest.

    What Happens After

Results typically take 2 to 4 weeks. The insurance company's underwriters review your exam results along with your application, prescription drug history, and motor vehicle records.

Based on this information, you'll be assigned a health classification (Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus, Standard, or Substandard) that determines your premium rate.
